Review - Bear Republic Brewing Company's Hop Rod Rye
"Essentially a strong American IPA made with 20% rye malt. Darker in color, Hop Rod Rye boasts a huge hop aroma and flavor accompanied by a slightly sweet, malty finish. A.V.B. of 7.5%. 2004 California State Fair, Silver Medal Winner; 2002 National Real Ale Festival, Chicago, Gold Medal Winner; 2001 San Diego Real Ale Festival, Silver Medal Winner & Best of Show (Runner Up) - og 1.074, ABV 7.5%, IBU 90+." -- Bear Republic Brewing Company
The Hop Rod Rye pours a deep chestnut color with a massive, off-white creamy head that just lasts and lasts. Amazing lacing that sticks to the glass like a spider's web. The head looks like that of a root beer float, where the head is so creamy and sturdy. Aroma is of glorious hops, and although we couldn't pinpoint it, we can definitely tell that this has the rye characteristic. Initial taste is lightly bitter, but quickly builds to a harsh bitter finish that overwhelms in a good way. Light to medium bodied, it has a soft carbonation and a light creamy texture. Spoils our palate like a grapefruit, we're glad we left it for last.
