Review - Cambridge Brewing Company's Bannatyne’s Scotch Ale

"Our famous Scotch Ale is back again as an early season offering to Old Man Winter, accompanying your brewer’s plea for tons of snow and an end to this unseasonable warmth.

This strong ale style comes directly from Scotland, boasting a huge, complex maltiness and very full body, which finishes with an herbal, hoppy dryness. We craft this traditionally big, malty beer from a grist of imported organic Scottish pale malt and a touch of roasted barley. We then caramelize the strong wort in the kettle, fortify it with a touch of molasses, and subject it to extended cold-conditioning to round out its myriad complexities. Intriguing flavors of caramel, toffee, chocolate, molasses, and a hint of treacle are not uncommon to those perceptive of palate.

So slip on that old kilt (wear whatever you want underneath- we’re pretty open-minded.) and enjoy!" -- Cambridge Brewing Company

Dark chocolate colored body with creamy, light-brown head with sticky lacing. Aroma is dominated by burnt malts with sweet notes. Initial taste is light bitter, ramping up to a moderately bitter finish, with a hint of sweet, red licorice after the carbonation subsides. Light on the mouth, it has a somewhat dry texture with active carbonation. Balanced flavor with hits of bitterness and sweetness up front, with a lingering sweet, but predominantly bitter finish.
