Never Summer Ale

Review - Boulder Beer Company - Never Summer Ale

"Never Summer Ale is a bold new look at winter beers: gutsy, full-bodied and an aggressive fusion of secret spices. Like the first run of the day, this ale is deep and clean, crisp and drinkable, perfectly blended for a smooth ride...through the Looking Glass. Grains: British Dark Caramel Malt, U.S. 2-row Barley. Hops: Nugget, Willamette, Cascade and Top-Secret Brewmaster's Spice." -- Boulder Beer Company

This ale pours a dark amber color with a small, fizzy light-brown head. Body is clear and flat. Sweet aroma of light malts. Initial flavor is lightly bitter with both a lightly sweet and lightly bitter finish. Malt taste. Mouthfeel is light to medium with an oily feel. Lively carbonation. A good winter beer. Warms without spices normally found in winter brews.

Pours a moderate caramel color with excellent clarity, building an average sized off-white head with a fizzy texture. Light carbonation in the body provides little support for the head as it slowly diminishes down to wispy fizz resting on the top. Very light lacing clings to the glass. Aroma is of moderate to heavy malt character with sweet caramel malts, some soft alcohol presence, and some fruity esters. Initial taste is softly sweet with some caramel like flavors, and moving towards the finish, we get some slight bitterness that lingers. Medium bodied, it has an oily mouthfeel with a dry bitter finish and soft tingly carbonation.
