PHILADELPHIA –First Person Arts continues to tell real-life Philadelphia stories in a unique way with its Edible World Food Tour. Next up, First Person Arts and Philadelphia’s famed beer reporter and connoisseur Don Russell, better known as Joe Sixpack, offer a tour of Northern Liberties and its many sites famous for cultivating a love of local and international artisan beers.  Beer novices and connoisseurs alike will journey Saturday, June 13 from 2-5:30 p.m. starting from The Swift Half at the new Piazza at 1002 N. 2nd St. Tickets for the event cost $75 per person, $140 per couple, and $65 for First Person Arts members and include all beer, food and gratuity. Tickets are available online at edibleworld.firstpersonarts.org or by phone at 267-402-2055.

This walking tour of the past and delicious present of Philadelphia’s storied beer neighborhood will take tour followers to the newly-opened Swift Half, Standard Tap, Foodery, the 700 Club, and Ortlieb’s Jazz Haus. At each stop tour-goers will experience food and beer pairings coupled with behind-the-scenes accounts of the founding and development of each establishment, offering a nuanced feel for the life history of the neighborhood.

Northern Liberties has experienced a transformation in recent years. It was the one of the first areas that Philadelphians moved to as the city began to grow outside of its original limits. It is home to some of the city’s oldest breweries, and it played a huge part in the city’s industrial growth. Most importantly for the history of beer, it was a home for European immigrants who built Philadelphia, and helped transform it into the beer capital of America before Prohibition. Vestiges of this history remain in Northern Liberties, but the neighborhood has begun to evolve into something new — less industry, fewer immigrants, more residential construction, and one of the region’s finest craft beer destinations.
